Chapter 16

Nate’s hand flew out and seized the young man’s collar, stopping him mere inches from my face. With a flick of his wrist, Nate sent him sprawling back into the bed. Before the young man could leap up again, Nate wrenched the curtains open.

Sunlight burst into the room, streaming over the bed. The moment the light graced his skin, smoke rose from his face, and a sizzling noise like crackling bacon filled the air. Burns spread across his skin quicker than ink in water. He screamed and dove off the bed into a shadowy corner, trembling.

Nate had stepped to the side, out of the line of fire. I staggered out of my chair, towards the curtains, to pull them shut. Nate caught my arms and held me firm.

“You won’t do that again,” he said to the cowering young man.

“I’m thirsty.” The young man’s voice cracked in places, and so gravelly that it all but grated my ears on the way in. “I need… I need…”

His grey eyes fixed on me, his breaths leaving him in ragged bursts. For the third time in as many hours, the hairs on the back of my neck and arms rose with the foreboding realisation that I was prey.

“Has he turned?” I asked.

“Completely. Whoever turned him must have given him a great deal of venom. Nobody transitions that quickly with one bite.”

I grasped Nate’s arms for support. “The vampire at the club… She meant to turn him right there.”

“I have a name,” the young man said.

“Then, for goodness’ sake, tell us what it is,” Nate said, raising an eyebrow.

“Gavin.” He ran a hand over his face, digging his fingertips into his skin. “My name’s Gavin.”

“Well, Gavin, you should know that taking blood from the vein is expressly forbidden, especially from an unwilling party.”

I kept my lips sealed shut. Nate had drunk from my veins on two separate occasions, but both had been dire emergencies.

Gavin groaned, his head in his hands. “I can’t think. I can’t… I can’t… I need—”

“Blood?” Nate asked. “You can have some, that I assure you. However, you will answer our questions first, understood?”

Gavin bared his teeth, grinding them together, and stared at Nate like a petulant teenager who had been told to clean his room.

“Rowan, you must sit. You’re shaking.” Nate guided me back to the chair and lowered me into it.

I couldn’t take my eyes off the young vampire in the corner. Newly created, yet so full of fury and bloodlust. Was this normal? Had Nate once been this way?

“Let me take you to bed,” he muttered in my ear. “You need rest.”

“I’m surprised you think now is the time.” Under any other circumstances, I would have been more than willing, and not even remotely for rest. “I’m staying. Don’t try to change my mind.”

He didn’t press the issue. Instead, he stood and turned to the new vampire with his hands on his hips.

“Come on, come on, what do you want to know?” Gavin said, smacking his lips as if he was chewing gum.
